Sustainability at ELTEN: progress in recycling and the circular economy
An EU directive has mandated that used textiles be collected separately since January 1st, 2025. The objective of this is to stop incinerating clothing and fabrics and instead reuse or recycle them. Clean separation and collection does, however, pose a challenge. Clothing that can be worn can be donated, but there is no comprehensive recycling solution for damaged textiles and shoes. Companies like ELTEN rely on innovative approaches to minimise the environmental impact and strengthen the circular economy.
Challenges and sustainable measures in footwear production
There has not yet been a marketable solution for the complete recycling of safety footwear. There are many reasons behind this: shoes are made from a complex mixture of materials such as leather, textiles, plastics and metals, which are firmly bonded to each other. It is not technically or economically efficient to separate them by type at present. Safety footwear must also fulfil strict standards guaranteeing protection, durability and chemical resistance. Safety-critical components in particular, such as protective toe caps and soles, must not be subject to any loss of quality, which makes the use of recycled materials more difficult.
Despite facing these challenges, ELTEN is already integrating recycled materials into various components of its safety shoes – such as shafts, laces, insoles and linings. This saves valuable raw materials without having to compromise on quality and durability. ELTEN also reintroduces production residues such as PU and TPU waste back into the manufacturing process or passes them on to partners for use in the production of insulating materials or anti-slip mats.
ELTEN also prioritises sustainability when it comes to packaging. The shoe boxes are made from recycled FSC®-certified material and the outer packaging also contains recycled content. These measures contribute to conserving natural resources and further reducing the ecological footprint.
Future prospects: research for a more sustainable circular economy
ELTEN is committed to research projects and pilot trials aimed at developing solutions for a more sustainable circular economy: The objective is to create environmentally friendly alternatives over the long term by means of innovation and cooperation. The objective is to continuously improve recycling processes and make shoe production more sustainable. In doing so, ELTEN counts on close cooperation with experts from a variety of industries and research institutions to drive forward the realisation of new technologies. The development of a shaft made from almost 100% recycled material as part of a pilot project – including workwear worn at a Dutch airport – is one example of this innovative approach.
