Taking sustainable action – making a global impact

Climate protection is about more than just reducing CO₂ emissions for us. This is why we support projects aimed at promoting renewable energies and improving quality of life. This allows us to combine environmental responsibility with social commitment – for a future benefiting everyone.

We support

As part of ClimatePartner, we support certified projects:

Project: emPOWERing Africa

The emPOWERing project enables us to make an important contribution to rural regions in Africa, particularly in Madagascar, Namibia, Egypt, South Africa, Mauritius and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Many communities in the region still lack secure and reliable access to clean electricity. It is precisely at this point that the project comes in, using innovative, solar-powered electricity supply systems to provide households and small businesses with an independent and sustainable energy supply. This not only reduces the use of environmentally harmful fossil fuels, but also significantly improves the quality of life for people in the local area.

Why the project is important

The emPOWERing project installs bespoke solar systems specifically tailored to the needs of remote households and communities. These systems provide safe electricity for lighting, communication devices and small electrical appliances. In addition to significantly reducing CO₂ emissions, the project also improves the safety and health situation by eliminating dangerous and harmful energy sources such as kerosene lamps. The project also fosters the local expansion of renewable energies and supports communities by providing training and services to enable them to operate and maintain the systems independently over the long term.

Our motivation for supporting this project

The emPOWERing project is an ideal complement to our climate strategy as it pursues a holistic approach that combines environmental, social and economic factors. Our promotion of renewable energies helps us make sustainable improvements that tangibly help protect the climate while also giving local people a significant boost. We believe it’s important to support projects that not only reduce emissions but also bring about long-term positive change.

The project is intended to contribute to the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

affordable and clean energy decent work and economic growth Climate protection measures

Project: COOKING STOVES

This climate protection project centres around distributing efficient cooking stoves in Zambia. Around one third of the world’s population is reliant on unsafe and environmentally harmful cooking methods, such as open fires or using coal and kerosene. These traditional cooking methods are not only inefficient, but also harmful to health as they generate lots of smoke. This is precisely where the project kicks in: Improved metal or clay cooking stoves, which make much more efficient use of heat, can reduce fuel consumption by up to 70 per cent, depending on the model. This not only saves large amounts of CO₂, but also reduces pressure on local forests by minimising the need for firewood.

Why the project is important

Distributing these more efficient stoves to households, small businesses and community facilities benefits local people in a number of ways. In addition to an obvious reduction in emissions, indoor air quality is significantly improved, which in turn greatly reduces respiratory diseases – something that is a real benefit to health, especially for women and children. What’s more, families save time and money by having to collect and buy less fuel. This project therefore not only achieves a positive effect on the climate, but also plays an important role in social and economic development.

Our motivation for supporting the project

We want to actively shoulder responsibility as a company and do our bit for climate protection. We know that we generate emissions that cannot be avoided. We counterbalance this by specifically supporting effective projects that adopt a holistic approach and combine climate protection with health promotion and sustainable development. It is not only an issue of compensation for us, but also a commitment that we take seriously towards our customers, partners and employees. We want to prove that we are taking concrete steps to embrace environmental and social responsibility.

The project is intended to contribute to the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

no poverty Health and wellbeing gender equality affordable and clean energy decent work and economic growth sustainable consumption and production Climate protection measures
